notes: This radio broadcast originated from a home owned by Ed and was relayed to any radio stations wanting to carry it. Ed announces that Jack Irons is now PJ's drummer.

01/12/95 - Waldorf-Astoria: NYC (Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame) [5m] (Ed)
set: Act of Love, Fuckin' Up
notes: Ed gives a rousing speech inducting Neil into the HoF, and Neil gives an equally inspiring acceptance speech. Stone and Jeff play 'Act of Love' (for the first time) with Neil and Crazy Horse. Later Ed, Stone and Jeff join Neil in 'Fuckin' Up,' which, of course, is censored by the TV network. [Link to Video Guide]

notes: Tickets to this show were available via a postcard mail-in lottery system. (More than 175,000 postcards were received!) Jack Irons is now officially PJ's new drummer. When Jack is thanked by Gloria Steinem, some members of the audience react by booing. Ed addresses this later: "... you miss Dave and I think that is really nice. But you should all thank Jack Irons because this band wouldn't be together today if it wasn't for him. He saved the life of this band, so thank him." 'Go' is dedicated to Dave. 'Act of Love' is played with Neil Young, sans Ed. Several of the performers (including Ed) attended a press conference earlier to discuss reproductive freedom.

02/05/95 - Moore Theater: Seattle, WA (Fan Club show) [100m]
attendance: 1,400
set: Jack Irons chant/Last Exit, Spin the Black Circle, Tremor Christ, Corduroy/Not for You, Animal, W.M.A., Lukin, Glorified G, Daughter, Rearviewmirror, Immortality, Blood
enc 1: Satan's Bed, Black, Porch, Garden, Go
enc 2: Better Man, Let My Love Open the Door
notes: Free tickets were mailed to Ten Club members and PJ appeared as the "Piss Bottle Men." Ed speaks of how they just got their vaccinations for the Asian tour, and, while speaking of "pains in the ass," says about the "jumping thing" (moshing and stagediving) that they are "beyond that now." 'Lukin' premiers at this show. A riff from 'Baba O'Riley' is played to open 'RVM.' 'Immortality's' ending is long, lingering and soft. They pause after a ripping 'Go' for Ed to note, "So this is what the fan club looks like ..." 'Let My Love Open the Door,' a Pete Townshend cover, is played for the first time live by the whole band.

02/06/95 - Moore Theater: Seattle, WA (Fan Club show) [100m]
attendance: 1,400
support act: Magnog
set: Release, Last Exit, Spin the Black Circle, Tremor Christ, Not for You, Corduroy, Lukin, Dissident, Act of Love, Animal, State of Love and Trust, Daughter/(W.M.A) /(Stuff and Nonsense), Improv , Whipping, Immortality, Go
enc 1: The Kids Are Alright, Porch, Jack Irons chant/Blood
enc 2: Jam, Satan's Bed, Rearviewmirror, Instrumental Jam
enc 3: Act of Love
notes: Free tickets were mailed to Ten Club members and PJ appeared as the "Piss Bottle Men." A new song/improv ('The Price of Everything' ?) is dedicated to Riz Rollins, a Seattle record store clerk and occasional funk DJ. Ed explains 'Whipping' as a song "... about getting hit in the face, turning your cheek and getting hit again. Come to think of it, all the songs are about that." 'The Kids Are Alright' is solo by Ed, accompanying himself on guitar. Neil Young joins PJ in a surprise 'Act of Love' encore.

02/08/95 - Adams Field House: University of Montana: Missoula, MT [100m]
support act: Shangri-La Speedway
set: Corduroy, Spin the Black Circle, Last Exit, Tremor Christ, Porch, Glorified G, Daughter/(Star Boy)/(The Real Me), Go, Animal, State of Love and Trust, Improv (I Don't Know About the Future), Not for You, Jack Irons chant/Immortality, Satan's Bed, Whipping, Even Flow, W.M.A., Blood
enc: Redemption Song, Yellow Ledbetter, Let My Love Open the Door
notes: Unusual to hear 'Porch' so early in a set. 'Go' features an extended intro. Ed gives his list of "B.S." words/phrases before 'Satan's Bed.' 'Even Flow' has a modified intro. 'Redemption Song' is a Bob Marley cover.

02/18/95 - Izumity 21 (Sun Plaza): Sendai, Japan [95m]
set: Oceans, Last Exit, Spin the Black Circle, Tremor Christ, Corduroy, Not for You, Dissident, Animal, Jeremy, Black, Rearviewmirror, Act of Love, Daughter/(Improv)/(ABitW-II)/(Hey Hey, My My), Why Go, Blood, W.M.A./drum solo, Go, Better Man, Porch, Indifference

attendance: 12,000
set: Release, Last Exit, Spin the Black Circle, Tremor Christ, Corduroy, Lukin, Even Flow, Glorified G, Daughter/(I Want You to Want Me)/(W.M.A.), Whipping, Immortality/Alive, Satan's Bed, Go, Animal, Porch
enc: Rearviewmirror, Black, Improv/Cover? (full song), Jeremy, Blood, Yellow Ledbetter, Indifference
notes: After 'Corduroy' Ed asks for the lights to be turned up so he can see if he recognizes anyone from the "Street Fest" and dedicates 'Lukin' to the Tokyo State Band. The improv after 'Daughter' is a modified version of 'I Want You to Want Me' (a Cheap Trick tune) and includes lyrics to the effect of "I want you to fuck me." The song after 'Black' is a very pretty, full song. Before 'Blood,' Ed speaks a few Japanese words to the crowd's pleasure and then comments, "How do you say good luck and don't kill yourself? We understand you all lost friends in the earthquake and we're all really upset about that ... we were actually gonna play Kobe ... it seems like everybody was affected by that so hang in there ... good luck."

02/21/95 - Kosei Nenkin Kaikan: Osaka, Japan [110m]
set: Release, Go, Last Exit, Tremor Christ, Corduroy, Lukin, Even Flow, Glorified G, Daughter/(I Don't Know About the Future), Alive, I Got Shit, Whipping, Jeremy, Animal, Blood, Improv, Porch/(Catholic Boys)
enc: Satan's Bed, Spin the Black Circle, Sonic Reducer, Footsteps, Rearviewmirror, Indifference
notes: Despite Ed having an upset stomach, this was a good show with an interesting setlist. 'I Got Shit' is played for the first time. A snippet from 'Catholic Boys' is intermingled with the 'Porch' jam. More sorrow is expressed about the earthquake and Ed has kind words for Japan: "... all of us have been really touched by how kind you are and gentle ... polite and you seem to respect each other ... you should be really proud of yourselves. Thanks for having us." [Link to Video Guide]

02/22/95 - Kokusai Kaikan: Kobe, Japan (canceled)

02/24/95 - TICC: Taipei, Taiwan
attendance: 3,000
support act: Mudhoney
set: Last Exit...
notes: With an unusual start, Ed is carried onto the stage wrapped in a silk blanket, from which he emerges wearing a fly mask. A Chinese woman accompanies the band onto the stage for the encore and explains (translates) that Ed is still feeling ill. Little is known about this setlist. Security was very restrictive with this extremely excited crowd.

02/26/95 - Folk Arts Theater: Manila, Philippines [105m]
support act: Mudhoney
soundcheck: improv, Better Man jam, Hungerstrike jam
set: Release, Last Exit, Spin the Black Circle, Tremor Christ, Corduroy, Not for You, Even Flow, Glorified G, Daughter/(Stuff and Nonsense)/(WMA), Why Go, Deep, Jeremy, Lukin, Whipping, Immortality, Alive
enc: Satan's Bed, Rearviewmirror, Better Man, Black, Let My Love Open the Door, Indifference
notes: A fan manages to make it onstage during the 'Even Flow' solo. Bouncers pulled him to the side and he has a grip on Ed's hand. The fan fell on the stage, pulling Ed on top of him. Ed gets up just in time to continue the lyrics after Mike's solo, singing "Even Flow ..." Then a fight ensues between the bouncers (trying to protect the fan) and the security guards (who have their billy clubs out). With the large crowd rioting outside the venue, PJ returns to the stage and rips into a furious 'Satan's Bed,' turning up the amps a few notches. Ed throws water over those in front every few songs; everyone is sweating like dogs.

02/28/95 - Hua Mark Indoor Stadium: Bangkok, Thailand [100m]
attendance: 5,000
support act: Mudhoney
set: Release, Last Exit, Spin the Black Circle, Tremor Christ, Animal, Corduroy, Lukin, I Got Shit, Alive, Go, Daughter/(Improv)/(ABitW-II)/(W.M.A.), Even Flow, Whipping, Rearviewmirror, Act of Love, Jeremy, Porch
enc: Black, Blood, Immortality

03/03/95 - The Indoor Stadium: Singapore, Singapore [110m]
support act: Mudhoney
set: Release, Go, Last Exit, Spin the Black Circle, Tremor Christ, Corduroy, Not for You, Lukin, Even Flow, Dissident, Animal, Deep, Jeremy, Rearviewmirror, Immortality, Alive, jam/Blood
enc 1: Daughter/(ABitW-II)/(W.M.A.)/(Little Wing teaser), Why Go, Porch
enc 2: Sonic Reducer
notes: The show is interrupted periodically with PA announcements stating that the show wouldn't continue if the crowd continued moshing (Singapore being extremely strict). PJ tells the crowd that's it's OK but to "keep it cool." The jam before 'Blood' is a funny 'Right Here Waiting' [Richard Marx - eek!] tease with these lyrics:

whatever you do
wherever you are
you can fuck [?]

wherever you piss
wherever you shit
make sure not to fall asleep in it

wherever you pee [?]
wherever you spit
make sure you're not caught by the cops

don't want to be caned
don't want to be shot
i just wanna... rock
During the 'Porch' jam, Ed shakes people's hands in the front, saying, "Hi, how are ya ... nice to mee you ... glad you could be here." In the middle of the show, Ed starts jamming the mic stand into the stage, breaking open a hole. The whole band disappears into it after the first set and returning for the encore back through the opening. Mark Arm joins PJ for 'Sonic Reducer' and invites everyone to an "afterparty" at a small island off Singapore at the end of the show.

The final encore, 'Yellow Ledbetter,' is performed without Stone.

03/08/95 - Memorial Drive Tennis Centre: Adelaide, Australia [125m]
attendance: 9,000
support act: The Meanies
set: Release, Last Exit, Spin the Black Circle, Tremor Christ, Animal, Corduroy, Not for You/Lukin, Even Flow, Glorified G, Daughter/(The Real Me)/(Is There Anybody Out There)/(ABitW-II), State of Love and Trust, Alive, Whipping, I Got Shit/Rearviewmirror, Why Go, Jeremy, Go, Blood
enc 1: Sonic Reducer, Once, I Got You (short), Better Man, Immortality, Porch
enc 2: Indifference
notes: After PJ tears through the first four songs, Ed cracks, "The wind's blowing this way and I just wanna say you smell great" (referencing the herbal odor that night). He introduces 'Corduroy' as, "This song's about a jacket." A modified snippet of 'Outshined' ("looking California, feeling like Australia") leads to "Glorified G." A bit of Pink Floyd's 'Is There Anybody Out There' is merged into the post-'Daughter' improvs. Ed's a capella, halting version of 'I Got You,' a song by the New Zealand band, the Split Enz, is short and he acknowledges that that's as much of the song as he knows. During a number of the songs mid-set, the stage crew lobs a tennis ball back and forth over the heads of the band, while they play!

03/10/95 - Entertainment Centre: Sydney, Australia [98m]
attendance: 12,000
support act: The Meanies

enc 1: Black, Better Man, Blood
enc 2: Needle and the Damage Done, Let My Love Open the Door
enc 3: Indifference
notes: Ed asks the crowd for help with the vocals after 'Animal' as his throat is plaguing him. In honor of Jeff's birthday, 'Happy Birthday' is sung and Flea of the RHCP brings out a chocolate cake and a cake fight ensues. Flea joins PJ for his very fine version of Neil Young's 'The Needle and the Damage Done,' introducing it as a song for "... Jeff and all of my loved ones."

03/11/95 - Eastern Creek Raceway: Sydney, Australia [130m]
attendance: 41,000
soundcheck: Dissident, Glorified G (probably incomplete)
support act: The Meanies

notes: Ed solos 'Throw Your Arms Around Me,' a Hunters and Collectors cover, prior to The Meanies' set, calling it "... an Australian song" and he's sporting a wig! Ed, experiencing throat problems, sips hot tea and says they won't play until the crowd gets some water. ("I'd give you some of this but it's hot tea.") The Meanies' singer joins PJ in 'RitFW.'

03/14/95 - Exhibition Park: Canberra, Australia [120m]
attendance: 18,000
support act: The Cosmic Psychos and The Meanies
set: Even Flow, Last Exit, Spin the Black Circle, Tremor Christ, Animal, Corduroy, Not for You, Lukin, Why Go, Jeremy, Dissident, State of Love and Trust, Go, Whipping, I Got Shit, Rearviewmirror, Better Man, Alive, Improv, Blood, Throw Your Arms Around Me, Sonic Reducer, Garden, Leash, Porch, Yellow Ledbetter
notes: Canberrans were treated to a long two-hour collection of Pearl Jam at their best. The Vitalogy songs, particularly 'Corduroy' and 'Not For You' took on a live, punk intensity that cannot be found on studio recordings. Of course, die-hard fans were present en masse to chant anthems, already knowing the words to 'Spin the Black Circle' and 'Better Man' front start to finish. But to hear the songs you've heard a thousand times on your stereo and walkman, 'Animal', 'Jeremy' and 'Alive', propelled with sweat and tears by the powerful, impressive, uncompromising and revitalised rhythm duo of Jeff Ament and Jack Irons, gave each tune a new urgency. The band never sounded apathetic throughout its marathon stretch; we're prepared to pay the price to hear that voice cranked to the max and actually hitting the notes in 'RVM' and 'Blood' which most singers these days only dream about. The band loosened up when playing their Hunters and Collectors cover - possibly because it wasn't their own song - and this time the lighters didn't get their flames blown out by the onstage hurricane. Eddie screwed up the words. Who cares. Vedder didn't. At least he had the decency to play something relatively local. 'Porch', 'Leash' (which the band apparently hadn't played live for a long while) and "Yellow Ledbetter" were not obvious finishers, but they certainly wound up the evening's proceedings exhibiting the band's strengths: great melodies fired by punchy, pugilistic musicians and an abrasive lead singer with vocal chords that can go the distance. And how. You are welcome back in Canberra anytime. You might not have liked it, but it liked you. [notes by: George Huitker, April 95] [Link to Video Guide]

03/16/95 - Flinders Park Tennis Centre: Melbourne, Australia [115m]
attendance: 10,000
support act: The Meanies
set: Oceans, Last Exit, Spin the Black Circle, Tremor Christ, Not for You, Elderly Woman, Corduroy, Animal, Dissident, Even Flow, Deep, Jeremy, Go, Daughter/(Improv)/(W.M.A.), Whipping, I Got Shit, Rearviewmirror, Alive, Blood
enc: Lukin, I Got You, Immortality, Porch, Sonic Reducer
notes: When the crowd rushes the pit, security gets rough and were fired after this show. Ed sings "white male Australian" in 'Even Flow.' He gets the crowd to yell, "Hurry up Scully!" (Stone is having a tech problem.) During 'I Got Shit,' a fan jumps on the stage from the pit and steals Jeff's water bottle, then runs back and dives into the crowd. 'I Got You' is a Split Enz song. Dave Grohl drums for PJ on 'Sonic Reducer.' [Link to Video Guide]

03/17/95 - Flinders Park Tennis Centre: Melbourne, Australia [128m]
attendance: 10,000
support act: The Meanies
set: Release, Last Exit, Spin the Black Circle, Tremor Christ, Corduroy, Not for You/Lukin, Animal, Glorified G, Daughter/(Stuff and Nonsense), State of Love and Trust, Why Go, Jeremy, Whipping, Immortality/Rearviewmirror, Alive, Black, Blood, Porch
enc: Go, Even Flow, Better Man, Improv (Words Seem Out of Place), Indifference, Rockin' in the Free World
notes: This show was broadcast on the Australian radio station, JJJ. Ed remarks: "It's not just us tonight, we're on the radio. I just thought I'd warn you, you know, if you, if you're s'posed to be at your friend's house spending the night, you weren't allowed to come, don't get your voice on the radio, we don't want you to get in trouble. Ah fuck it, get in trouble!" Later he says, "Fine bunch of mutants we got here We're all mutants up here, too." 'Jeremy' and 'Even Flow' are both sporting a new intros. Ed notes the full moon: "It's really too bad they couldn't open the roof in this place cuz there's a fuckin full moon out there that we're missing ... so if someone's out there listening to us in their car, stick your head out the window.. at home, go to the windows. Things happen in a full moon, good things, bad things, things happen." Ed gives his list of N.W. words/phrases. Reference is made to the poor security the previous night ("... we got the guys from last night the fuck outta here"). Ed acknowledges his wife, Beth: "She's back home, so it's not as if she's going to hear this on the radio, but it's me and Beth's 129 month anniversary today. And I'm going to sing the first line of this famous New Zealand song. This is for her. 'I've got you, and that's all I want.' [sings a couple bars of the Split Enz, 'I Got You']. [download wav soundbyte]
That's for her. This one's for you." (leading to 'Better Man'). Dave Grohl joins PJ for 'RitFW.' [Link to Video Guide]

03/18/95 - Sidney Myers Music Bowl: Melbourne, Australia [121m]
attendance: 13,000-30,000
support act: The Meanies
set: Corduroy, Whipping, Last Exit, Tremor Christ, Spin the Black Circle, Animal, Dissident, State of Love and Trust, Daughter/(Stupid Mop)/(ABitW-II), Blood, Jeremy, Why Go, I Got Shit, Rearviewmirror, Better Man, Jam, Not for You, Go, Alive, Once, Satan's Bed, Footsteps, Porch, Throw Your Arms Around Me, Yellow Ledbetter, Baba O'Riley
notes: After a few hundred fans broke through the gates, security allowed ticketless fans to enter the barricades to see this show from the perimeter. Cool setlist and a very on night. 'Baba' is a very long version.

03/21/95 - Entertainment Centre: Brisbane, Australia [130m]
attendance: 15,000
support act: The Meanies
set: Last Exit, Spin the Black Circle, State of Love and Trust, Corduroy, Elderly Woman, Whipping, Animal, Dissident, Blood, Glorified G, Daughter, Why Go, Jeremy, Lukin, ?, Rearviewmirror, Immortality, Alive, Porch
enc: Go, Tremor Christ, Not for You, I Got You, Better Man, (Act of Love?), Once, Yellow Ledbetter
notes: Mike disrobes during this show (like Rotterdam), naked in the spotlight for 'Porch.'

03/22/95 - Entertainment Centre: Brisbane, Australia [130m]
attendance: 15,000
support act: The Meanies
set: Oceans, Last Exit, Corduroy/Not for You, Tremor Christ, Animal, Dissident, Go, Daughter/Improv, Deep, Jeremy, Footsteps, Rearviewmirror, Immortality, Alive, Black, Blood
enc 1: State of Love and Trust, Whipping, I Got You, Better Man/Brisbane rhyme, Porch
enc 2: Against the 70s, Sonic Reducer, Indifference
notes: The crowd in the pit area picks up the seats and they are carried to the back of the auditorium. People are packed in too tightly and Ed says, "... up here, we got a problem. We gotta clear some room. Please everyone, if you wanna do something for me, as a favor ... everyone take like five steps back ... now on the next song, jump up and down not forward, OK?" and PJ slams into 'RVM.' A full version of the Split Enz 'I Got You' is dedicated to "... the girl who changed her fuckin' name to Pearl Jam." Mike gets wild and creative during an extended 'Porch' jam and Ed wraps up the song by repeating "I'm happy, I hope you're happy, too ..." a couple of times (likely a David Bowie 'Ashes to Ashes' nod). 'Against the 70s' is introduced as a Mike Watt song (not played at a PJ concert before or since), with Dave Grohl joining PJ on drums and staying for a rocked out version of 'Sonic Reducer.' Great setlist and wonderful versions of songs.

03/24/95 - Mt. Smart Super Top: Auckland, New Zealand [135m]
attendance: 13,000
support act: The Dead Flowers
set: Throw Your Arms Around Me, Oceans, Last Exit, Spin the Black Circle, Tremor Christ, Corduroy, Elderly Woman, Lukin, Animal, Glorified G, Daughter/W.M.A., Rats, Go, Jeremy, Rearviewmirror, I Got Shit, Not for You, Immortality, Alive, Blood, Better Man, Porch, History Never Repeats, I Got You
notes: The crowd begins smashing forward, even before PJ takes the stage. Ed takes the stage alone with his guitar and says he wants to start off real slow and for everyone to stay calm, playing 'Throw Your Arms Around Me.' The rest of PJ take the stage and, still trying to keep things calm, play 'Oceans,' but this crowd is fired up and packed in tight. Neil and Tim Finn, formerly of the Split Enz, join PJ for covers of their songs, 'History Never Repeats' (later released as one of the cuts on the '95 fan club discs) and 'I Got You,' much to the pleasure of this New Zealand audience.

03/25/95 - Mt. Smart Super Top: Auckland, New Zealand [120m]

[Mike Watt's tour with Dave Grohl drumming, Pat Smear on guitar and Ed Vedder on guitar; Hovercraft (with Ed on drums at some shows) and Foo Fighters open. PJ significance: 'Habit' is played at several shows on this tour, actually making a live premier in this configuration rather than at a PJ show.]

enc: Rearviewmirror, Dissident, Yellow Ledbetter, Porch
notes: This date was originally scheduled at Boise Idaho's University Pavilion. Ed quell rumors of PJ returning to Ticketmaster for ticketing by beginning the show with, "... you may have heard about us giving into Ticketmaster in L.A. and New York City. Well, I just wanna tell ya—that's bullshit." 'Long Road' is premiered here. 'Why Go' features a new drum intro. After 'Alive,' a kid throws his baseball cap up on stage, Ed says, "He throws his hat up on stage, now he says 'hey eddie I want it back.' Ah, he just wanted me to hold it he says. I'll do more than just hold it,'" and he proceeds to turn around, unzip his pants and stick the hat down his pants, then pulls it out, and says, "There you go" as he throws the hat back to the kid. At the start of the encore, Stone says, "Where's that hat? I wanna smell that hat." Ed goes into a story about other places they could have played in Wyoming ... "Thermopolis" (crowd boos). Jeff: "Straight outta Thermopolis." Ed: "We could played Bar None. Is there actually a city called Meeteetsie? Don't touch me teet-sie. We really thought seriously about playing Cokeville but we didn't think that was very PC, so we thought Green River might fit." He chats about some other towns and then says he's glad they're in Casper (huge applause) and thanks Bad Religion and mentions that they played with them before in Germany, leading to 'RVM.' The aftershow Monkeywrench Radio broadcasts begin after this concert, with Ed spinning favorites such as the Foo Fighters and Pete Townshend disks and taking phone calls.

notes: Ed enters the stage on an old bike and remarks, "This place sucks ... obviously that is the farthest thing from the truth. Just like us going back to Ticketmaster is the farthest thing from the truth." 'Habit' is played for the first time by the whole band, though it was also played during the Mike Watt tour (Ed only). 'Leaving Here,' a High Numbers song, is premiered at this concert.

notes: PJ performs their first six songs seated, experiencing some of the effects of the altitude and taking a different approach from the previous night. 'Ship Song' is by Nick Cave. They get frustrated being seated (Stone declares, "All right, "fuck the seats") and they dump the chairs as they launch into 'Last Exit.' [download wav soundbyte]
The 'Falling Down' tune surfaces five years later, forming the melody for the song 'Distress' on The Rockfords album. 'RVM' is interrupted to break up a fight. ("What are you guys fighting for? This is a rock and roll concert.") PJ picks up the song right where they left off. A new, slower version of 'Jeremy' is premiered here. The impromptu 'I've Just Seen a Face,' a Beatles' tune, is sung by Ed a capella. 'This Boy' is a song by an LA band, That Dog. Ed's parting comment: "Thanks for coming up to the mountain with us."

notes: This date was originally booked at Lake Tahoe's Boreal Ridge Ski Resort. After much audience debris is tossed onstage (shoes, shirts, etc.), Stone jokes, "OK, we got enough stuff. You can stop throwing now. Look at all this stuff!" Ed remarks later, "If there are any young entrepreneurs out there, I think we could help you open up a thrift shop with all the shit we got up here."

enc: Forever in Blue Jeans, Porch
notes: Security permitted cameras into this show. There is no pit at this venue and the seats are bolted down. The mood was tentative, given the outcome of the previous show in San Francisco. After becoming comfortable with an extremely appreciative audience, the show became unforgettable. Long, jammy version of 'Alive.' Stone discovers a new, goofy riff to inject into the middle of 'Blood' and the band has a good laugh over it. Eddie addresses the crowd before 'Not For You' about the recent tour difficulties. He quips, "I gotta tell ya, my stomach hurts like hell right now. I think I got cryptosporidium," a reference to a cryptosporidium outbreak in the Milwaukee water system in the early 90s. (Recall he left the stage early at PJ's previous show in San Francisco due to food poisioning.) Ed brings out a Neil Diamond impersonator and the guy's wife (local folks, Thunder and Lightning) to sing 'Forever in Blue Jeans.' Ed pulls up a chair and crosses his legs like he's just sitting in a coffee house with a few friends and sings the second verse. Fun show with the guys showing a lot of energy.

enc: Star Boy, Little Wing/Maggot Brain, Better Man, Porch
notes: If a show could have been any different (and better!) than the previous night, this was it. Ed surprises the audience by joining the Frogs' set for 'I Only Play for Money.' Dressed in a Beatles-type wig, sunglasses and shiny silver jacket, he is not recognizable until he begins to sing. In return, Jimmy of the Frogs accompanies Ed in the acoustic encore 'Star Boy.' A surprising opening song, 'Act of Love,' is extremely hard and driven. Lots of long jams that really show off Mike's ability. For the encore, Chad Smith (RHCP's drummer) joins PJ and a fascinating version of the Hendrix classic, 'Little Wing.' They jam for about eight minutes, mutating into 'Maggot Brain,' a funkadelic song from the 70s penned by Eddie Hazel. Mike's guitarwork leaves the crowd (and the rest of the band apparently) awestruck. It was later reported that Mike was hospitalized after the two Milwaukee shows due to dehydration and exhaustion.

enc 1: Everyday People, Let My Love Open the Door, Better Man, Rearviewmirror, Black, Blood
enc 2: Yellow Ledbetter
notes: First night Monkeywrench broadcast the show through the radio. The crowd is pumped, with people crowdsurfing even during Otis Rush's set. Cool 'Tommy' riff after 'Lukin.' 'Black' lyrics are altered from "sun" to "moon" and Ed gestures to the full moon above the stadium. He jokes, "There's some fancy people in the skybox ... they're blinking to us, sending us a message up there." The crowd boos and he tells them not to get angry: "... you know life has a way of working itself out, you know? Think about this for a sec, right? These are the rich, fancy people, right? They got all the luxury, right? Looks to me, like they're the farthest ones away from the stage and they're behind a fuckin' window ... you hang in the trenches long enough, it pays off ..." Ed destroys his black Telecaster featuring the "skateboarding is not a crime" bumpersticker, smashing it against his mic stand. Producer Brendan O'Brien joins the band on keyboard for a surprising 'Everyday People' (a Sly and the Family Stone song) and then 'Let My Love Open the Door.' First lightning and later, fireworks, filled the sky this night. Amazing setlist and long performance with the pressure on in an intimidating venue.

notes: Ed thanks everyone for coming and being able to find an "alternative date" (referencing the rescheduling of this stretch of shows). After 'Dissident,' Ed says, "We're just gonna try this one" leading to a funky, hard version of 'Satan's Bed.' Stone's comment afterward: "Well!" 'I'm One' (from Quadrophenia) is the 'Daughter' tag. 'Even Flow' is a rousting version with an extended guitar jam, leading to a super 'RVM' and a sweet 'I Got Shit.' During the encore, Ed says, "You all got school tomorrow? There's too many of you to write notes for." ;)

comments: At some point during The Ramones' set someone comes out, jumping around in a dress and a mask with a "Gabba Gabba Hey" sign. Okay, Ed - nice try on the disguise. At the start of PJ's set, Ed takes the stage grinning and wearing a heavy jacket on this terribly hot day. Immediately after 'Act of Love,' the jacket is gone. The show is paused briefly after 'Last Exit' to "get everybody up" and everyone is encouraged to "take two steps back." A surprise song, R.E.M.'s 'Talk About the Passion,' is played during the first encore.

enc 1: Better Man, Sonic Reducer, Rockin' in the Free World
enc 2: Yellow Ledbetter
notes: Ed stops the show during 'Tremor Christ' when someone is down in the pit. He says they can't start again until the person is helped. After the fan has been tended to, the band picks up the song exactly where they left off. Eddie adds lines from the Ramones' 'I Believe in Miracles' to 'Daughter,' followed by the Talking Heads' 'Pulled Up.' Ed leaves the stage after 'Rats' ('Rats!'). Stone says, "We're just gonna jam for a bit," and the band does a 'Voodoo Chile' jam, with Mike filling in on vocals. Brendan O'Brien sits in on organ for 'Better Man.' 'Sonic Reducer' with Joey Ramone is the show stopper and is later released on one of the '95 fan club discs. During 'Sonic Reducer,' Ed pokes fun at his and Joey's difference in height. :) The whole band is in a great mood and having a blast. 'Spin The Black Circle,' 'Habit' and 'I Got Shit' are on the setlist but not played.

enc: Red Mosquito, Better Man, Leaving Here, Footsteps, Porch
notes: True to their word, PJ returned to Salt Lake City after the previous rain-out and played "twice as long," playing two shows. Being the night after Halloween, the band hits the stage wearing costumes, Ed's being a very large alien head and alien gloves with long fingers. They proceed to toss items into the crowd (the band claiming it's candy corn and cigarettes). Ed comments after 'Tremor Christ:' "I believe we've met before. We're gonna make good on our promise." There's a very sweet improv played before 'Elderly Woman.' mp3 soundbyte of SLC improv (4,171k)   Ed's introduces 'Even Flow' as a song they "... learned off an old '50s jukebox." 'Red Mosquito' is a new song. 'Leaving Here' has an interesting intro. Monkeywrench Radio broadcast this show.

notes: Monkeywrench Radio broadcast this show. The improv after 'Daughter' is a modified 'Young Man Blues' modifying the lyrics to "young girl's blues." 'Brain of J' premiers. Ed comments about how "it's almost like tonight we're playing for you and last night we were playing for your parents." This comment is made because the crowd isn't very responsive and (according to his comments on Monkeywrench Radio), they had intended to play a little longer (extra encore), but everyone left early!

notes: Ed opens the show early with the (then) unreleased 'Dead Man.' Later he quips, "So these are the faces I would have seen if I could have lifted my head up in San Francisco." After a long departure from these sort of antics, Ed climbs the speaker stacks and scaffolding during 'Porch.' He includes a bit of the 'Three Little Birds' tag in Porch, repeating the "every little thing's gonna be alright" line a few times. After 'Better Man' he notes, "What a sad fuckin' story. Wanna hear some good news? Of course it's not as exciting as the bad news. Isn't that true? ... Ever see people rally around a spot of good news? They can take some bad news and make it last for years." enc 1: Spin the Black Circle, Leaving Here, I Can't Explain, Porch
enc 2: Yellow Ledbetter
notes: As is the case typically, the second show in the same venue never disappoints and this show is no exception and Mike is having a wild night. At the end of 'Tremor Christ,' Ed comments, "Hello kiddies. Get comfortable; we're gonna be here for a while." At the end of 'Why Go,' Ed raises his guitar overhead, as if preparing to smash it, but a tech swipes it from his hands and Ed looks terribly surprised! Ed clearly shows how he feels about 'Glorified G,' substituting the lyrics, "... glorified version of I hate this song" twice, looking over his shoulder at Stone and half smiling. ;) mp3 soundbyte of glorified hate (117k)
Experiencing tuning problems at the end of 'I Got Shit,' Ed tosses his guitar and says, "New guitar, please! After all, I am a rock star." Pretty humorous. 'Lukin' sports an ambient guitar intro, ending with a quick "1234" leading to a snappy 'Whipping.' Ed returns to the stage on a skateboard for the first encore, and Stone ges a small fire going at the base of Ed's mic stand. 'Spin the Black Circle' is introed as "a love song." Mentioning that the two San Diego shows help raise $50,000 donated to the Surfrider Foundation leads to a comment about how they had messed up the next song the previous night. Then Ed flubs the start of 'Leaving Here,' and notes that "it's really a rather hard song to play" but then they kick into it. This show is a fine conclusion to a wild 1995 tour.
