notes: This was a secret show was a benefit to assist in legal support for a member of the Surfrider Foundation. PJ is billed as the "David J. Gunn Band" and most of Vs. (plus 'Better Man' and 'Whipping') premier as they have just completed recording the new album. The band even asks for requests at this show. Ed jokes around: "We're accepting any donations of acid that you may have. Just put it in a little envelope with your name on it ... and if we write a great song while we're on it, we'll put your name in the credits." A guitar riff from Van Halen's 'Eruption' is played between 'Why Go' and 'Alive.' 'Alive' is dedicated to Ed's uncle, Freddy Vedder. The transition from 'Dirty Frank' to 'Rats' is very cool sounding.A bit of AC/DC's 'Dirty Deeds' is played.

06/16/93 - University Theatre: University of Montana: Missoula, MT [105m]
attendance: 1,300
support act: Orgone Box
set: Animal, Go, Whipping, Even Flow, Dissident, Once, ? (Brother?), Glorified G, Why Go, Jeremy, Elderly Woman, Alive, Black, Blood, Oceans, Deep, Leash, Rats, (Dirty Frank), Porch, Fuckin' Up, Baba O'Riley, Garden, Indifference
discrepancy: Go, Animal, Whipping, Even Flow, Dissident, Once, ? (Brother?), Glorified G, Why Go, Jeremy, Elderly Woman, Alive, Blood, Oceans, Deep, Rats, Porch, Fuckin' Up, Rockin' in the Free World, Black, Sonic Reducer, Indifference
notes: 'Elderly Woman,' 'Fuckin' Up' and 'Indifference' are premiered. The NBA finals were televised this night. Being basketball fanatics, PJ keeps the crowd waiting for nearly an hour and a half. Jeff's parents video taped the show from the audience. (The photos for the Rolling Stone cover story in fall of '93 were shot at this show.)

06/17/93 - The Met: Spokane, WA
support act: Lazy Susan
notes: After 'Jeremy,' Ed jokes with the crowd, "... Jeremy Spokane ... hee hee ... get it?" At one point a fan is literally tossed from the crowd, over security, and onto the stage. The young girl spends the next few moments of her life with Ed's arm around her as he tells her to be careful. Then he releases her to jump over security back into the crowd. Interesting written setlist on the back of a handbill (artwork signed by Kozik but reportedly a forgery) includes "Whippen," "Dissodent" and Brother!

06/26/93 - Sentrum Scene: Oslo, Norway [approx. 110m]
attendance: 1,500
set: Jeremy, Rearviewmirror, Elderly Woman, Even Flow, Glorified G, Daughter/(WMA), Garden, Go, Animal, Alive, Porch, Fuckin' Up, Leash, Sonic Reducer, Rockin' in the Free World, State of Love and Trust
notes: This "secret gig" at Sentrum Scene in Oslo was labeled as a "first day Isle of Calf after-party" with two Norwegian bands and a surprise act. Pearl Jam played at this two-day festival's second day. It was a great show and all of the band looked very pleased to do a small-club concert at the start of the European tour.

06/27/93 - Oslo, Norway: Isle of Calf Festival (Kalvoya) [70m]
supporting: Neil Young
set: Even Flow, Animal, Go, Rearviewmirror, Elderly Woman, Deep, Why Go, Jeremy, Black, Alive, Glorified G, Daughter/(Pulled Up), Porch/(Tearing)
enc: Oceans, Leash, Sonic Reducer
notes: Ed chats about politics (George Bush) and explains how they cancelled their previous Oslo date. A fun show. [Link to Video Guide]

06/28/93 - Sjöhistoriska Museet: Stockholm, Sweden [57m]
attendance: 15,000
supporting: Neil Young
set: Animal, Go, Rearviewmirror, Elderly Woman, Why Go, Jeremy, Black, Alive, Sonic Reducer, Porch/(Tearing)
enc: Daughter/(Tonight's the Night)
notes: At this outdoor show, Ed references how the last time they played Stockholm someone (an American) was backstage stealing their stuff. He references how Americans do these kind of things and to be careful; they can even bomb your country. PJ's set ends with the audience picking up the 'Tonight's the Night' vocal and the band listening to the audience sing in unison. After Neil's set, a light flashes from the side of the stage and one of the speakers 30 feet up is smoking and catches on fire. With the roadies fighting the flames, Neil returns for the encore, unaware of the fire, and comments on how they haven't played the next song for a long time so ... "Let's bring out Pearl Jam to do it." Then Neil and Pearl Jam perform a thunderous, blistering version of "Rocking in the Free World" together--an exciting ending to a somewhat lackluster PJ performance. [Link to Video Guide]

06/30/93 - Jäähalli : Helsinki, Finland [41m]
attendance: 8,000
supporting: Neil Young
set: Animal, Even Flow, Why Go, Jeremy, Glorified G, Daughter, Black, Alive, Porch/(Across the Universe)/(Fuckin' Up)
notes: Opening with a good version of 'Animal,' a typical 'Even Flow' with a short, ripping solo by Mike follows. Ed is having problems with his voice and is using accentuated talking in place of singing at times. 'Why Go' begins with an unusually long introduction. 'Glorified G' is warmly received by the crowd. Afterward, Ed finally speaks to the audience, announcing 'Daughter,' which is performed with a particularly delicate, gentle tone and no tags. 'Black' is now performed with an absence of emotion that was present only six months prior, and segues neatly into a canned version of 'Alive.' Before 'Porch,' Ed says, "I promise not to come back until I have a voice," yet 'Porch' is delivered adequately, and tags are borrowed: the lyrics "Nothing is going to change my world" (The Beatles' 'Across the Universe') and "Why do I keep fuckin' up" (Neil Young's 'Fuckin' Up') are chanted.

07/02/93 - Stadio Bentegodi: Verona, Italy [45m]
supporting: U2
set: Even Flow, Animal, Go, Rearviewmirror, Elderly Woman, Why Go, Jeremy, Black, Alive, Porch
notes: PJ is not received well at the shows opening for U2. The crowd is not into PJ and just wants U2.

07/03/93 - Stadio Bentegodi: Verona, Italy [45m]
supporting: U2
set: Why Go, Jeremy, Even Flow, Glorified G, Daughter, Alive, Go, (Sympathy for the Devil)/Porch, Rockin' in the Free World
notes: Ed, wearing a shirt saying "Paul" (Bono's given name), again tries to enchant the audience, sporting a devil mask and a green fly mask. After duct taping the waist and both legs of his baggy shorts on, he then throws himself into the audience from the long arms of the "Zoo TV tour" stage arms twice. [Link to Video Guide]

07/06/93 - Stadio Flaminio: Rome, Italy [46m]
attendance: 80,000
supporting: U2
set: Why Go, Jeremy, Even Flow, Glorified G, Daughter, Animal, Alive, Dissident, Blood, Porch/(Tearing)
notes: This crowd is clearly here for U2. Ed plugs the organizations (Greenpeace and Amnesty International) represented at this stadium concert by asking people to sign their names at their booths. The intro riff to U2's 'I Will Follow' is played before 'Daughter.' [Link to Video Guide]

07/07/93 - Stadio Flaminio: Rome, Italy [57m]
attendance: 80,000
supporting: U2
set: Even Flow, improv, Go, Once, Rearviewmirror, Why Go, Jeremy, Glorified G, Daughter/(MLK), Alive, Black, Blood, Porch/(Tearing)
notes: The crowd seems a bit more into PJ than the previous show. At one point, Ed asks, "You all OK? I saw you all working it out up here in the front, which is good. The love music comes later on in the evening." U2's 'MLK' is covered briefly as a 'Daughter' rambling. At the show's conclusion, Ed dons Bono's fly mask saying, "the fly says goodbye" and exits.

07/10/93 - Slane Castle: Slane, Ireland [52m]
attendance: 30,000
supporting: Van Morrison and Neil Young
set: Why Go, Jeremy, Even Flow, Rearviewmirror, Elderly Woman, Once, Glorified G, Daughter, Alive, Porch, Baba O'Riley
notes: Some of the PJ guys join Neil's band for 'Rockin' in the Free World' during his set.

07/11/93 - Finsbury Park: London, England [55m]
supported by: James, Teenage Fanclub and 4 Non-blondes
supporting: Neil Young
set: Animal, Go, Once, Blood, Even Flow, Jeremy, Glorified G, Daughter, Alive/(Improv), Why Go, Leash, Porch/(Fuckin' Up/Tearing)
notes: Ed expresses some concerns about disliking playing large venues like Finsbury. PJ seems to have difficulty finding their way back to 'Porch' after the 'Tearing' improv. [Link to Video Guide]

07/13/93 - Brixton Academy: London, England [90m]
attendance: 6,426
support act: Tribe After Tribe
set: Why Go, Deep, Jeremy, Blood, Dissident, Even Flow, Go, Animal, Black, Glorified G, Daughter, Alive, Rats, Porch, Rearviewmirror, Whipping, Sonic Reducer, Once, Indifference
notes: 'Rats,' due for release in two months, has a funky opening. The start of 'Whipping' sounds almost reggae-like. Ed, offering some insight into 'Rearviewmirror,' explains "... listen to this song in a car really fast, driving away from someone you hate." [Link to Video Guide]

07/14/93 - Brixton Academy: London, England [105m]
attendance: 6,426
support act: Tribe After Tribe
set: Release, Even Flow (song stopped), Blood, Animal, Why Go, Deep, Jeremy, Rearviewmirror, Beast of Burden/(Suck You Dry), Alive, Black, Go, Daughter/(W.M.A.), Porch/(Tearing), Once, Garden, Blues Jam/State of Love and Trust
enc 1: Leash, Fuckin' Up, Sonic Reducer
enc 2: Indifference
notes: 'Even Flow' is stopped until someone in the crowd who is down gets back up. Ed starts counting the people in front to see if everyone is all right. The Rolling Stones' 'Beast of Burden' is covered briefly, with the lyrics modified to "... all I want from you is to make love to me" with Ed clarifying that those are just lyrics and they don't really mean it. A little bluesy jam leads to 'Sonic Reducer' [mp3 soundbyte of blues jam] (654k)
The encore is introed as "Here are some Journey songs for you" as a review of the previous Finsbury Park show compared PJ to Journey. A solid show.

07/16/93 - Sportspaleis Ahoy: Rotterdam, Holland [105m]
attendance: 9,500
support act: Tribe After Tribe
set: Release, Why Go, Deep, Jeremy, Rearviewmirror, Elderly Woman, Glorified G, Daughter/(WMA), Garden, Go, Animal, Alive, Black, Porch/(Tearing), improv, Once, Fuckin' Up, Leash
enc 1: Sonic Reducer, Rockin' in the Free World, State of Love and Trust
enc 2: Indifference
notes: PJ has a few problems adjusting to the size of this venue. Ed introduces 'Go' as "... a song you can sing to your own body ..." and he calls it "Don't Go Out On Me." Ed requests the lights be turned on and left on for 'Alive' ("Hey, we'd like to be able to see these people"). Great show!

07/17/93 - Sportspaleis Ahoy: Rotterdam, Holland [115m]
attendance: 9,500
support act: Tribe After Tribe
set: Oceans, Even Flow, Once, Whipping, Rearviewmirror, Jeremy, Deep, Garden, Animal, State of Love and Trust, Angie (Ode to Utrecht), Black, Alive, Glorified G, Daughter/(Ruby Tuesday), Why Go
enc 1: Elderly Woman, Leash, Porch/Drum Solo
enc 2: Fuckin' Up, W.M.A., Footsteps, Baba O'Riley
notes: Becoming more comfortable with the Ahoy tonight, PJ improvises the Rolling Stones' 'Angie' with lyrics about Utrecht with the crowd joining in and Ed telling them, "Good singing ... much better than me. I'd better buy a ticket." 'Porch' is wrapped up with an unusual drum solo by Dave.

07/18/93 - Paradiso: Amsterdam, Holland [48m]
attendance: 1,000 tickets distributed (only 500 were allowed inside)
support act: Tribe After Tribe
set: Indifference, Even Flow (song stopped), Glorified G, Daughter, Black, Why Go, Hard To Imagine (teaser), Jeremy, Porch
notes: A "secret" show featuring an unusual open with 'Indifference.' Ed's vocal problems surface during 'Daughter' (he is suffering from a cold) and the show is stopped briefly when he leaves the stage after 'Why Go.' After two more extended songs (with little vocals), PJ apologizes and the show ends.

08/11/93 - Max Bell Arena: Calgary, Alberta
attendance: 4,700
support act: Cadillac Tramps
notes: A terribly hot venue, totally packed. Despite a hammered Ed and a very poor sound system, making the bass lines and bass drum often indistinguishable, PJ delivers a magical performance, the most memorable part of the night being when Ed improved a song called 'Canadians Rule' after talking about how much he loved Canadians. This show is a mix of Ten songs and newer Vs. songs.

08/12/93 - Convention Center: Edmonton, Alberta
attendance: 4,000
support act: Cadillac Tramps
set: Release, Even Flow, Once, Jeremy, Deep, Alive, Black, Garden, Why Go, Owner of a Lonely Heart, ... (plus 1 song from Vs)
notes: This setlist is in no particular order after 'Release.' Lyrics to 'Owner of a Lonely Heart' are modified.

08/14/93 - Gimli Motorsport Park: Gimli, Manitoba (Sunfest '93) [100m]
attendance: 47,000
set: Even Flow, Why Go, Deep, Jeremy, Animal, Glorified G, Daughter/(Gimme Shelter), Go, State of Love and Trust, Garden, Blood, Alive, Black, Once, Porch, Indifference, Sonic Reducer, Rockin' in the Free World, Baba O'Riley
notes: This show is frequently referred to as "Mudfest" due to a downpour prior to the concert. One of the reasons that this show is so incredible is that PJ was jumping out of their collective skins to be able to cut loose for more than 90 minutes. Currently touring with Neil Young, they were confined to an early 45 minute set. They were offered this slot (and are the only non-Canadian band ever to play this large festival) and it became their night. Despite Ed's drinking, PJ is very high energy and intense.

08/17/93 - Robert Guertin Arena: Hull, Quebec
support act: Doughboys
The arena was packed and many people got in free. The set opens with 'Go' and 'Animal.' 'Rearviewmirror' is played midway through the set, in a slow love ballad style. Most all of Ten is played with the exception of 'Release' and 'Garden.' During the third encore, with half of the lights on, a very intoxicated Ed enters the stage with a big wooden cross with a skull on each end with a candle (or a candle in the shape of a skull). Half was already gone. Someone was brought on stage to sit and hold the cross while they played just one song ... 'Indifference.'

08/18/93 - Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) Stadium: Toronto, Ontario [67m]
attendance: 60,000
supporting: Neil Young
set: Go, Animal, Why Go, Jeremy, Rearviewmirror, Even Flow, Glorified G, Daughter, Alive, Porch, Baba O'Riley
notes: Mike plays a few notes from 'Sweet Home Alabama' just before 'Glorified G.' PJ joins Neil for his encore, 'Rockin' in the Free World.' Blues Traveler and Soundgarden also played this show. Blues Traveler's John Popper helps out, playing harmonica on 'Baba O'Riley' from a wheelchair. [Link to Video Guide]

08/19/93 - Verdun Auditorium: Montreal, Quebec [120m]
attendance: 5,000
support act: Doughboys
set: Oceans, Go, Animal, Why Go, Jeremy, Rearviewmirror, Elderly Woman, Even Flow, Glorified G, Daughter, State of Love and Trust, Alive, Black, Whipping, Porch/(Across the Universe)/(Tearing), Once, Garden, Fuckin' Up, The Kids are Alright
enc: Sonic Reducer, Rockin' in the Free World, Indifference
notes: 'Go' is stopped and restarted because the crowd is going nuts. The Who song, 'The Kids are Alright,' is premiered at this show. [Link to Video Guide]

09/02/93 - MTV Video Music Awards: Universal Amphitheater, Universal City, CA [15m]
set: Animal, Rockin' in the Free World (w/ Neil Young)
notes: Pearl Jam wins four awards (out of five nominations) this night, including Video of the Year for 'Jeremy.' Ed says that without music, he might have ended up like Jeremy in the video (shooting himself). He jokes that the MTV's spaceman award "... looks like Bono." Neil Young's appearance is unannounced. Nearly every music artist interviewed after this awards show noted 'RitFW' as the highlight of this night. [Link to Video Guide]

09/02/93 - Viper Room: Los Angeles, CA
support act: Darling Buds
set: State of Love and Trust, Once, Even Flow, Sonic Reducer, Animal, Rearviewmirror (setlist may be incomplete/out of order)
notes: PJ plays Jonny Depp's club after the MTV awards show. Apparently roadie-less, Mike asks, "Is there a pick in the house?" and Stone tunes and retunes his own guitar. At some point during the performance, Michael Stipe and Bill Berry from R.E.M. join them onstage.
From RAW US: "The set was loose and tremendous fun, but it would have to be a heck of a lot more enjoyable minus the posse of glamorous Hollywood-ites who were way too cool to show emotion during a set thrashed out by one of the hardest working bands in America.Hardworking and pros, too.How else could McCready have been able to drink his beer while playing 'Even Flow' without missing a beat? My only wish is that Pearl Jam had been goofier, thrown caution to the wind and followed through with 'Detroit Rock City' when messing around while Stone tried to tune his guitar." [Lisa Johnson]

09/04/93 - B.C. Place Stadium: Vancouver, BC [80m]
supporting: Neil Young
set: Rearviewmirror, Even Flow, Why Go, Deep, Glorified G, Daughter/(The Real Me), Alive, Black, Animal, Go, Jeremy, Leash, Once, Sonic Reducer, Fuckin' Up, Porch
handbill

09/04/93 - Rendevous Club: Seattle, WA
notes: Reportedly PJ played this club after the day show.

09/05/93 - Gorge Amphitheater: George, WA [87m]
attendance: 19,000
support act: Blind Melon
supporting: Neil Young
set: Go, Animal, Once, Even Flow, Dissident, Rearviewmirror, Garden, Blood, Jeremy, Why Go, Glorified G, Daughter/(Tonight's the Night), Alive, Black, State of Love and Trust, Porch/(Suck You Dry improv)
enc: Sonic Reducer, Leash
notes: The Gorge is a beautiful venue and this show begins in the daylight and ends in darkness. At one point, Ed suggests that everyone just sit down and watch the sunset because "... you don't get many of these." This show is pretty much the patented Vs show with little variation from the album versions of these songs except for a few lyrical flubs. Mike plays a little 'Yellow Ledbetter' teaser prior to 'Daughter.' Mudhoney's Mark Arm joins PJ for 'Sonic Reducer,' which is performed as an encore "... with Neil's permission." Ed references being embarrassed having accepted the MTV video award and says he wished he'd stayed home.

09/06/93 - Portland Meadows Race Track: Portland, OR [85m]

supporting: Neil Young
set: Go, Animal, Even Flow, Alive, Blood, Once, Glorified G, Daughter/(Gimme Shelter), Deep, Jeremy, Black, State of Love and Trust, Porch/(Suck You Dry improv), Why Go, Sonic Reducer, Crazy Mary, Rockin' in the Free World
notes: A fairly long 'Gimme Shelter' is tagged after 'Daughter.' Victoria Williams joins PJ for 'Crazy Mary.' This was the first time this song was performed live at a show. PJ and Victoria join Neil Young for 'RitFW.'

attendance: 299
set: Go, Animal, Baba O'Riley, Daughter, Dissident, Even Flow, Glorified G, Indifference, Once, Rats, Rearviewmirror, State of Love and Trust, Why Go, WMA, My Generation
notes: A "secret" show in preparation for their tour in support of Vs.

10/26/93 - Vs. is released (vinyl was released a week earlier on 10/19/93)

10/27/93 - The Catalyst: Santa Cruz, CA [90m]

enc: Indifference
notes: Another surprise warm up show with 'Breath' on the setlist, played a bit sloppily and the band mentions it had been a while since they last played it. 'Sail Away' is a Neil Young tune. 'Sonic Reducer' is dedicated to "punk rockers everywhere." After a departure from similar stage antics, Ed climbs to the balcony and jumps into the crowd.

10/28/93 - Warfield Theater: San Francisco, CA [90m]
attendance: 2,250
support act: Rollins Band
soundcheck: Athena/long vocal jam, Rearviewmirror, Rats instrumental/Rats/jam

enc: My Generation, Whipping, Leash, Indifference
notes: This was the first "official" show of the '93 fall tour, with PJ working to strike the balance between the old and new and the fast and the slow songs in this tiny theater. 'Alive' is introduced: "Take it from someone who's gone through death. Learn from people who are still living. Learn from them while you can." Mike injures himself smashing his guitar after 'Porch.'

enc: Blood, Once, Footsteps, Alone, Fuckin' Up, Sonic Reducer, Baba O'Riley, Indifference
notes: Pearl Jam, ready for Halloween, dresses for the occasion. Ed is wearing a Hannibal Lecter mask and Stone has on that crazy shark swimming cap. Ed tells a story before 'Elderly Woman' about a girl who wrote him saying that PJ's music was the only thing that kept her alive when she considered suicide. She included a phone number and he called her, "... but the fuckin' number was disconnected." As the band returns for the encore, they carry out a makeshift cross and Ed remarks, "Here's to 2,000 years of Christianity ... and to 15 minutes without it."

enc 1: The Kids are Alright, Blood, Why Go, Once/(Tearing), Sonic Reducer
enc 2: Indifference
notes: In recognition of the return to his second home town, Ed quips, "There's a lot of people coming up to me and they say 'hey Eddie, remember me from high school?' Hey, man. I've smoked a lot of pot since then. I don't know who the fuck you are." 'Shine' is a Rollins Band cover.

11/03/93 - Civic Theatre: San Diego, CA [100m]
attendance: 3,000
support act: American Music Club
set: Release, Animal, Why Go, Jeremy, Rearviewmirror, Go, Even Flow, Dissident, Daughter/(Young Man Blues), Alive, Once, Black, Improv (Hold Me), Porch, Elderly Woman, Whipping, Glorified G, Sonic Reducer, Baba O'Riley, Indifference
notes: Ed comments to young fans in front row, "Don't take this the wrong way, but you guys would get killed in a real pit." At one point, Ed has the lights turned on saying the band had sushi that night, he has some leftover rice and wants to "try something." He flings the rice into the crowd and it spews out in a million pieces. He says, "Now that's not Minute Rice. It was supposed to stick together." Apparently he was trying to launch a ball of the rice into the balcony. Before walking off stage, Ed says, "Keep the oceans clean for me here guys." There was real sense that Ed felt good to be back on his old stomping grounds.

11/04/93 - Roxbury Club or Whisky A Go-Go: Hollywood, CA
notes: Reportedly PJ played four songs at one of these venues this night.

11/05/93 - Empire Polo Fields: Indio, CA [100m]
attendance: 25,000
support act: Weapon of Choice, Eleven and American Music Club
soundcheck: Wash, Alone, Yellow Ledbetter
set: Release, Go, Animal, Why Go, Deep, Jeremy, Glorified G, Daughter/Improv (It's Time to Realign Your Body with Your Mind), Alive, Rearviewmirror, Improv (Thank You), Blood, Rats, Once, Porch/(Tearing), Fuck Me in the Brain
enc: Sonic Reducer, Even Flow, Indifference, Baba O'Riley
notes: This show, originally planned for the LA area, was problematic with respect to parking and cold temperatures. The unruly crowd was moshing in line during the soundcheck and to PA music! Before PJ started, a roadie sang a hysterical rendition of 'Copa Cabana.' The audience is launching shoes at the stage even before and during the opening acts. In fact, during Eleven's set, a shoe hits Jack Iron's bass drum, he stops the song and says that if he finds out who threw it he would make him pay for the damages (quite pissed). Finally, PJ hits the stage, with the audience behaving outrageously. Prior to 'Deep,' Ed remarks, "Kill your local rapist, but torture him first, then serve him to your enemy for dinner." Later: "The first guy I met today gave me this book and asked if I wanted to know the secret for living forever." Tossing it into the crowd, he says, "Why the fuck would I want to live forever?" During 'Porch,' Ed invites the audience to spit at him. The agitated crowd, continuing to throw stuff onto the stage, leads Ed to comment that "... me and Jeff are going to the front gate and when you exit, we are going to beat the shit out of every barefoot person here" .wav file from Indio 93 and "... throw a gun so I can shoot you." The band eventually plays from behind their amps so they won't be hit by the flying shoes. This audience was awful. The recording of 'Blood' from this show is released on the 'Daughter' single. 'Fuck Me in the Brain' was released later on the third fan club single (as 'Ramblings'). The guys deserve a medal for playing this long and this well despite the rowdy crowd.

11/06/93 - Mesa Amphitheater: Mesa, AZ [100m]
attendance: 5,000
support act: Mohican singer-songwriter, Bill Miller and Butthole Surfers
set: Why Go, Jeremy, Go, Animal, Dissident, Alive, Glorified G (song stopped), Daughter/(improv)/(W.M.A.), Once, Even Flow, Black, Deep, Leash, I am a Patriot, Rearviewmirror, Whipping, Garden, Yellow Ledbetter, Porch
notes: The two Mesa shows were benefits for Mt. Graham, a mountain sacred to the Apache people. Originally, $1 from the shows was to go to the cause.Lightning during the show added intensity. Ed stops 'Glorified G' to start it over "... as the song deserves." Ed does a lovely solo version of 'I am a Patriot.' 'Yellow Ledbetter' is a big surprise and this live version appears on the b-side of certain versions of the 'Daughter' single. A bit of 'Sunshine on my Shoulder' is within 'Porch.'

11/07/93 - Metal Shop Interview w/Ed [10m]
set: Animal, Ed's answering machine message

11/07/93 - Mesa Amphitheater: Mesa, AZ
attendance: 5,000
support act: Mohican singer-songwriter, Bill Miller and Butthole Surfers
set: Release, Why Go, Jeremy, Go, Animal, Better Man, Alive, Glorified G, Daughter, State of Love and Trust, Even Flow, Black, Blood, Rearviewmirror, Whipping, Porch
enc 1: Rats, Sonic Reducer, Footsteps
enc 2: Leash, Indifference
notes: Ed tells the crowd that after visiting the mountain with some of the Native Americans who held the land sacred, the band had decided to donate ALL of the proceeds from the shows to benefit their cause. 'Footsteps' is played by request (someone holds up a sign); Ed is angered by someone crowdsurfing. Before 'Leash,' the audience tosses a University of Arizona sweatshirt onstage which Ed drapes over a mic stand and burns, being displeased with the university because they were trying to develop an otherwise pristine piece of land holding significant historical worth to the Apaches.
About Mount Graham: Mount Graham is the most sacred mountain to the traditional San Carlos Apache people and home to many plants and animals that don't exist elsewhere. The Mount Graham Coalition is an international group (associated with Earth First!) working to protect the mountain from development of an astronomical complex of observatories that was then under construction by the University of Arizona. The University and the Vatican want to put an observatory on Mt. Graham for the purpose of searching for alien life. The mountain is sacred to the tribe(s) in the area. When the rest of the world was expecting Pearl Jam to focus on a world tour in support of Vs., the band took time out to play two benefit shows for this cause. Late, they wrote a letter to President Clinton expressing their support for the Coalition.

set: Go, Animal, Why Go, Deep, Jeremy, Dissident, Even Flow, Daughter/(Footsteps), Rearviewmirror, Whipping, Alive, Black, State of Love and Trust, Once, Happy Birthday, Glorified G, Garden, Porch, Leash, Yellow Ledbetter
notes: 'Why Go' includes a 'No Attention' (Sex Pistols song) tag in it. The band seems to related a lot of onstage banter to being in Texas. 'Deep' begins with Ed saying, "Deep ... deep in the heart of Texas." He preludes 'Jeremy' with, "You might know this story. The 'Footsteps' tag in 'Daughter' is particularly haunting. Midway through the show, Ed sarcastically addresses the crowd: "How does it feel to be rich?Actually, maybe you should ask us. I'll give my money away, I don't want to be rich.I just have a feeling it might change you. It might turn you into a fucking asshole." And there is this very funny exchange:

Ed: OK, Mike has something to say
Mike (hoarse): I lost my fucking voice
[crowd laughs]
Ed: Jeff has something to say
Jeff: Someone told me that Meatloaf roomed with someone (at U Texas) ... Glenn Frey? Jesus.
Ed: At this school, that's nothing tobe proud of. Some loud fan:Fuck Glenn Frey!
[crowd laughs]
Ed: Fuck my mother, too. 1-2-3-4 ...

notes: An upbeat, enthused show. Ed introduces 'Animal' as a song about his mother. The encore begins with Ed saying "This is a song for someone who's here tonight and they know who it is and it's by Pete Townshend, leading to a lovely version of 'The Kids are Alright,' performed by Ed solo. PJ premiers 'Last Exit,' with Ed bringing a sheet of paper out and saying, "These are words for a new song no one has heard before ... I don't think Mike knows it yet." Later he asks the crowd if they want "a fast song or a slow song," and they do 'Sonic Reducer.'

enc 2: Leash
notes: Ed sings a snippet of 'Crazy Mary' after 'Garden' ... a precursor to Victoria Williams joining PJ for 'Crazy Mary' with producer Brendan O'Brien on keyboards later. Mike gets creative during 'Porch,' tossing in some "Hendrix doing the Star Spangled Banner at Woodstock" sounds. An interesting improv near the end of 'Porch' ("Touch me ... it's not a good time right now ... fuck with me, I'll fuck with you worse ..."). Ed sings a verse from 'Ben' at the end of 'Rats.'

11/22/93 - Barton Coliseum: Little Rock, AR

support act: Urge Overkill
set: Release, Rearviewmirror, Even Flow, Alive, Once, Why Go, Black, Jeremy, Garden, Deep, Go, Animal, Daughter, Glorified G, Leash, Porch, Indifference
notes: Originally this show was scheduled for Pine Bluff, Akansas. Above setlist is incomplete/incorrect order. Ed expounds, "Is Little Rock pretty? Is it fucked? Is it pretty fucked?" The crowd roars with approval. He is relatively non-chatty, staying near center stage most of the night. Ed passes his wine bottle to the audience and later walks to sidestage, climbs on top of a monitor, standing with his arms crossed, almost threatening to jump into the crowd. Toward the end of the show, Ed says, "This next song was written specifically for this show, and it's called 'Treat Me Like the Devil.'" (May have been an improv or an early version of 'Satan's Bed.') Later he says, "This next song is called 'Treat Me Like an Angel'" leading to 'Porch.' Mike reads the band names and sports team names off the various clothing items tossed onto the stage throughout the show. Eventually, PJ throws most of their own clothing back to the crowd, leaving the stage wearing only their shorts and shoes.

enc 1: The Kids are Alright [Ed solo], Rearviewmirror, Black (song stopped and restarted), Rockin' in the Free World
enc 2: Indifference
notes: Good show with Ed fairly chatty and lots of little guitar riffs and fills are heard between songs. 'Oceans' pops up oddly in mid-set. 'Porch' is intense with a cool strobe light effect. Ed stops 'Black' about a minute into it asking people to quiet down, saying they haven't played it lately and that "... it's kind of a heavy thing" and asks the crowd surfers to"just cool it for one song, all right?" "If you come up, we're gonna spit on you and we're gonna kick you and the whole thing. Just mellow for one song. These people up front--they just wanna watch some music, OK? Deal!" The song is restarted from the beginning. Ed starts off the encore with a solo performance of 'TKAA,' leading directly into 'RVM.' The band is on and Ed's voice is flawless.

notes:Someone down front throws a t-shirt to the stage, hitting Ed in the face. He leaves the t-shirt on his face, takes the microphone off the stand and wraps the cord around his neck, giving the appearance of hanging himself with his face cloaked. A very intense moment in an amazing show.

enc 2: (Green River reunion): Swallow My Pride, Ain't Nothing to Do, My Way
notes: The show was originally scheduled for the Sands Hotel. 'Tremor Christ' premieres. An apparent Beatles tribute is the 'Daughter' outro, with a series of tunes ended with Ed whispering "Get Back" at the very end. In a near Green River reunion, Mudhoney's Mark McLaughlin and Steve Turner join PJ (with Urge Overkill's drummer, Chuck Treece) for 'Swallow My Pride' and 'Ain't Nothing to Do.' 'Swallow My Pride' and 'My Way' (written by Paul Anka, featuring Terry Presley, an Elvis impersonator assisting on vocals) are recorded to be released as one of the '95 fan club singles.

enc 1: Last Exit, Tremor Christ, Blood, State of Love and Trust, I've Got a Feeling, Rearviewmirror
enc 2: Rockin' in the Free World
notes: Ed thanks Joey Ramone for "letting me use his mic stand." The "Mamasan trilogy" of 'Alive, 'Once' and 'Footsteps' resurfaces, with Ed likening it to their "Nutcracker." It is likely that PJ chose to play 'I've Got a Feeling' because of the date, with Ed noting, "Today's an important day. Go home and look it up" (anniverary of John Lennon's death).

attendance: 2,000
PJ was originally scheduled to perform at the taping of the MTV Live and Loud New Year's Eve special, closing the show after Nirvana played. But PJ didn't perform as a group, cancelling at the last minute because Ed was sick. Attendance at this event included people like Layne Stayley and the cast of Almost Live, as well as many local television newscasters and politicians as. Also on the bill were The Breeders, Cypress Hill and Nirvana (who were allowed to play an extra half-hour).As they were setting up Cypress Hill's gear, they also set up PJ's gear and at the endperformed 'The Real Thing.'
