10/22/90 - Off Ramp Cafe: Seattle, WA (Mookie Blaylock) [45m]
attendance: 299
supporting: Inspector Luv and the Ride Me Babies (who later became Green Apple Quickstep), Bathtub Gin
soundcheck: Even Flow
set: Release, Alone, Alive, Once, Even Flow, Black, Breath
enc: Girl
notes: In the first week after their initial meeting, the members of the band that will become Pearl Jam play this show as "Mookie Blaylock." Jeff steps off the small stage to wander in the crowd a bit while playing during the soundcheck. 'Even Flow' is a very unusual, slow version. In fact, most of these songs sound very different and are slower versions, with 'Release,' 'Once' and 'Black' sporting different/early lyrics. 'Girl' hasn't appeared on a setlist since this show.11/13/90 - Off Ramp Cafe: Seattle, WA (Temple of the Dog show) [60m]
attendance: 299
support act: Bathtub Gin
set: Hunger Strike, Wooden Jesus, Say Hello 2 Heaven, Reach Down, Call Me a Dog, Times of Trouble, Pushin' Forward Back, Your Saviour, Four-Walled World
notes: Everyone from the Temple of the Dog recording, sans Ed. Near the very beginning, Mike plays the opening strains of what would five years later become Mad Season's 'River of Deceit.' This was the only time Temple of the Dog played a complete set.12/16/90 - KISW: Seattle, WA
notes: The band appears on the KISW new Music Hour, introducing Ed to the world and telling the story of meeting him via Jack Irons. They give away tickets to the upcoming 12/22/90 AIC show at the Moore, providing tickets to those phoning in with band names. After the interview, a demo of 'Once' is played.12/21/90 - New Melody Tavern: Seattle, WA (Mookie Blaylock)
We're unsure if Mookie Blaylock played at this "Seattle Musicians for the People" show or if it occurred. We have this poster and would like to hear from you if you have news about this show, which was a benefit for Toys for Tots, the food bank, etc. Many bands are listed to appear, including Alice in Chains, Luv Battery, Kristen Barry and Bathtub Gin.
New info: Someone in the Seattle area who was at this show says that "just a couple of guys from the band" were there and that they "played a few songs acoustically." It wasn't well-attended.
More new info: Someone else who drove to this show, despite a big snowfall, doesn't think that either Mookie or AIC played due to the weather.12/22/90 - Moore Theater: Seattle, WA (Mookie Blaylock)
supporting: Alice in Chains

handbill02/07/91 - Florentine Gardens: Los Angeles, CA (Mookie Blaylock) [35m]
supporting: Alice in Chains
set: Release, Once, Even Flow, Alone, Breath, Brother, Garden, Porch, Why Go
notes: Dave Krusen drums at this rather rushed performance sporting a cool setlist. After 'Once,' Mike jams some riffs and Ed talks about hanging out in L.A. 'Alone' features scorching vocals by Ed and awesome soloing by Mike. Ed asks for a new mic after 'Breath' and introduces 'Brother' as being about big brother. This is the only documented time that this obscure song was played live. 'Garden' premieres, with Mike's solo shorter than later, polished versions; same for the premiere of 'Porch' although the bridge seems to get the crowd excited. 'Why Go', also played for the first time, is high energy and closes the show.02/08/91 - God Save The Queen: Long Beach, CA (Mookie Blaylock) [35m]
supporting: Green Jello
set: Wash, Once, Even Flow, Alone, Alive, Deep, Porch
notes: The band is introduced as "the band had played other places in California, and is now playing here, and has former Mother Love Bone members, and is now called Mookie Blaylock." Ed talks about playing the Florentine Gardens: "Last night we played the Florentines, which is a cool place! The security people are really nice over there." "No shit, Eddie!" some guy in the crowd shouts. A very cool, short concert with lots of crowd interaction with the power and vibe of the band bursting out.02/10/91 - The Bacchanal: San Diego, CA (Mookie Blaylock)
supporting: Alice in Chains
notes: The Bacchanal is an old haunt where Bad Radio played occasionally. There is brief video footage of Eddie on stage singing with AIC, sharing the microphone with Jerry Cantrell.02/11/91 - Club With No Name: Hollywood, CA (Mookie Blaylock) [25m]
supporting: Alice in Chains
set: Wash, Once, Even Flow, Breath, Porch
notes: Ed discusses the band's name (Mookie Blaylock) and that they are expecting a call from Mookie's lawyer demanding the band change their name ("... like tomorrow ... probably the next time it's gonna be a different name ... like ... Nuclear Love Frogs.")02/13/91 - Winter's (on El Cajon Boulevard): San Diego, CA (Mookie Blaylock)
02/15/91 - I-Beam, San Francisco, CA
supporting: Alice in Chains02/16/91 - Cattle Club: Sacramento, CA (Mookie Blaylock)
attendance: 200-300
supporting: Alice in Chains
notes: This smallish crowd is clearly there for AIC and most attendees are drinking and only 30 people or so are watching the Mookie set. A lively set, opening with a slow song and then launching into a rocker - Ed's passion showing and the whole band all over the place with hungry energy in this tiny venue (a former desolate Chinese restaurant and off-again/on-again gay bar).02/20/91 - Melody Ballroom: Portland, OR (Mookie Blaylock)
also on bill: Love on Ice, Alice in Chains
notes: Small crowd and a setlist opening with 'Release' and 'Alive' is also played. Ed is wearing an "Air Love Bone" shirt and Mike is sporting a Robert Johnson shirt.

notes: Ed thanks the opening bands and makes a reference to Mother Love Bone playing there in the past. 'State of Love and Trust' and 'Oceans' are played live for the first (documented) time.07/13/91 - The Marquee Room: New York, NY [45m]
supporting: Rev. Horton Heat, Afghan Whigs, Gorilla, Beasts of Bourbon, Codeine
set: Wash, Once, Even Flow, State of Love and Trust, Alive, Garden, Deep, Why Go, Porch
notes: This is a musically powerful show with Mike showcasing his guitar prowess. Ed seems in a cocky mood, making pointed wisecracks between nearly every song. ("Let me show you guys the industry handshake. 'Oh, hi. Nice to meet you. Oh, ah, yes it was a pleasure. Sorry ... I see Slash.'") He jokes about 'Even Flow,' saying, "How many times we played this, once or twice? Wait, there's industry people here. We don't wanna fuck up." After 'Alive,' he quips, "OK, let's start getting into it. All the industry guys left. This, being PJ's first NYC show, Ed proclaims, "Hey, mama. I played New York City."07/17/91 - Wetlands Preserve: New York, NY [60m]
set: Wash, Once, Even Flow, Alive, State of Love and Trust, Black, Why Go, Garden, Porch, Alone, Breath

notes: This free, outdoor show was also Dave Abbruzzese's first concert drumming with PJ and the last show of the summer '91 Sounds of Seattle concert series (later called "Pain in the Grass"). As an intro to 'Porch,' Ed says, "This song is about if you love someone, tell him." Ed climbs the speaker stacks during 'Porch' and glances over his shoulder at the Space Needle. Ed takes Jeff's basketball from behind the speakers and throws it playfully into the crowd. The ball makes its way back to the stage during 'Breath.' The seldom played 'Breath' is wonderful.08/27/91 - Ten is released

set: Once, Even Flow, State of Love and Trust, Alive, Jeremy, Why Go, Porch
notes: This ASCAP showcase occurs the same day that PJ releases their debut album, Ten. Mike plays the end of 'Alive' atop Ed's shoulders. Ed swings from the rafters for 'Porch' high above the crowd. He swings back and forth and finally lets go, falling into the crowd. He's back on stage in a flash to bash the cymbals with his microphone. All this for a $5 cover!
poster09/03/91 - RKCNDY: Seattle, WA

set: Release, Once, Even Flow, State of Love and Trust, Porch, Alive, Jam, Oceans, Jam (w/ Smells Like Teen Spirit), Deep, Garden, Jeremy, Why Go
enc 1: Black, Breath
enc 2: Ive Got A Feeling
notes: An intense show, as a fight spilled out of the nearby Roseland and someone was shot just prior to the start of PJ's show, seeming to affect Ed quite a bit. "... the whole house was going berserk, with a couple people stage-diving near the end. Humidity was 100 percent, and the temperature seemed to hit triple digits, but much of the mania was helped along by the wild antics and herky-jerky movements of everyone in the band, especially Vedder, who at various times swung from the lights above the drummer, or climbed atop a nearby speaker column, or toppled flat on his face." [from the Portland Oregonian] Check out the setlist scan with "prompts" written to the left of the song list (eg: b-ball), apparently there to remind Ed of the between song "impromptu" banter. He spoke of the Portland Trailblazers and Seattle Sonics (and more).

setlist scan (written on a handbill!)09/28/91 - MTV "Headbanger's Ball" interview (aired) (Ed & Mike) [13m]
Ed and Mike talk to Riki Rachtman about the 'Alive' video and other general BS. Ed pulls a crumpled piece of paper out of his pocket and holds it up for the camera, while he explains that he saw Soundgarden the previous night. He proceeds to talk about them and Rachtman comments that Mike and Eddie are there to promote Pearl Jam, yet they are talking about Soundgarden. "What nice guys."09/30/91 - I-Beam: San Francisco, CA [65m]
set: Wash, Once, Even Flow, Suggestion/State of Love and Trust, Alive, Garden, Deep, Black, Jeremy, Why Go, Porch, I've Got a Feeling
notes: Bad day for the band it seems. Equipment problems are apparent and fights break out in the crowd a lot. During 'Even Flow,' Ed gets disgusted and flings the mic to the floor, choosing to bellow out the lyrics unaided. He can tell people in the back can't hear him though, so he quickly picks it back up. A capella version of Fugazi's 'Suggestion.' Ed stands on a monitor and then tumbles into the audience during 'Alive.' 'Garden' starts, and after the first verse Ed sees a fight in the first row and breaks it up, then sings the second verse from down on the floor, which seems to calm people down. Then he says, "All right I'll trust you guys to be friends," and climbs back up on stage. Ed suddenly jumps into the crowd again during 'Jeremy,' probably to break up another fight, since three crew members pile in after him. After 'Why Go,' Ed quips, "I'm out of breath and Mike's out of clothes." Someone in the front hands Ed a home-made stickman T-shirt. Ed says, "This thing, gentlemen, is illegal," and then laughs. "Who did this? We love it." Ed is holding it up for the audience to see and Jeff comes over to get a better look at it. Ed says, "Pretty good job!" and Jeff is smiling and seems to agree. "I think he's gettin' better than you, Jeff." Ed reads the tag, "100% cotton," shrugs and smiles. The mood lightens up a bit, and Ed climbs like a maniac during 'Porch.' The end of the song is sung from the rafters. 'I've Got a Feeling' is a Beatles cover. (PJ's studio version appears on the Japanese release of Ten and early promo releases of 'Alive'). Long, jammy version, with Mike adding Hendrix bits and Ed improvising lyrics.10/02/91 - Troubadour: Los Angeles, CA
attendance: 450
notes: Ed climbs up to the lighting rig and then to the balcony.10/03/91 - Foundations Forum: Los Angeles, CA
notes: Temple of the Dog reunion. PJ (minus Dave) joins Chris Cornell and Matt Cameron for 'Hungerstrike.' Alice in Chains was also in attendance.10/05/91 - Winter's: San Diego, CA
attendance: 125
notes: Ed used to work at this tiny club on El Cajon Boulevard. This show is played after the 'Jeremy' video shoot (Chris Cuffaro's version). With Ten catching on, the club sells out and the crowd outside grows, with people insisting they are on the guest list. During a break between songs, Mike strums a few 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' chords and Ed, plus the entire crowd, begin singing along. A fan gets onstage and taps Ed on the side of his face during the "hit me with a surprise left" lyric during 'Jeremy.'10/06/91 - Palladium: Hollywood, CA [35m]
attendance: 4,000
set: Wash, Once, Even Flow, Alive, Jeremy, Why Go, Porch
notes: Ed comments that it was "a year ago tomorrow" since he met the band. This showcase gig (a 5th anniversary party for RIP Magazine) also featured Spinal Tap, Alice in Chains, Screaming Jets, Soundgarden and Thunder. A "special surprise guest" (rumored to be Metallica) was supposed to play, but it was announced that there was a mix up but the night wasn't over and, "... so the Seattle theme continues ... ladies and gentlemen, Temple of the Dog!" Now the crowd has dwindled to only 500 people, but three songs are performed: 'Hunger Strike,' 'Reach Down' and 'Pushin' Forward Back.'10/07/91 - Mason Jar: Phoenix, AZ

Jeff sits with Doug Pinnick from King's X, watching support act I Love You's gig from the back. No one seems to recognize Jeff. The place is half-full but PJ puts on a great show, blowing the audience away. The setlist is a mix of Ten songs with 'I've Got a Feeling' near the end. The band mingled with fans after the show.

But if "this" keeps up, Flea's not gonna be smashing any basses tonight. Ed invites a dozen or so fans on stage to dance and then yells at someone during 'Porch:' "Leave them alone. Hey! One song. You guys are there. You're standing on an ice rink. We're gonna warm it up real slow. By the end of the night, it'll be melted away." Prior to 'Alive,' Ed says, "We made some new friends right before the show ... actually, I hope you're all friends. I hope you're all friends with each other." During 'Porch,' Ed changes the words to, "What the fuck is this world coming to, can't even jump into the crowd without you takin the fuckin shirt on my back" He announces, "Enjoy the Pumpkins. Originally scheduled for 11/4/91, this show was moved to 11/6/91 (thus the incorrect date on the poster). 'I've Got a Feeling' is included in the encore and a new song is played, announced as, "State of Loving Trust." The back room wall is inscribed with Stone and Ed's signatures. Ed began swinging on some of the beams running the length of the ceiling during this show.
handbill11/07/91 - The Landmark Theatre: Syracuse, NY
supporting: Smashing Pumpkins, Red Hot Chili Peppers
set: Release, Why Go, Alive, Garden, Black, Alone, Even Flow, Porch
notes: In a quick 30-40 minute set, PJ is full of energy and Anthony Keidis jumps into the crowd following Ed's stage dive. The theater is only half full and there are problems with the seats up front as people try to mosh but can't because of the permanent seats. This date was previously believed to be at The Haunt in Ithaca, but a representative from The Landmark confirms this show date and a ticket stub has surfaced.11/08/91 - CBGBs: New York City, NY [42m]
set: Black, Even Flow, Why Go, Jeremy, Alive, Once, Porch, I've Got a Feeling
notes: This show was unannounced and the audience consisted primarily of fan club members and press. The show started early and ended by 9pm. Unusual opening with 'Black,' by request.11/09/91 - Tower Records: Rockville, MD (acoustic) [30m]
attendance: 50
set: Wash, Black, Alive, Suggestion, Porch
notes: Small, in-store promo for their first album, Ten, with PJ in a festive, friendly state. Before the set begins, Ed is thumbing through a magazine trying to pick out his first tattoo and later modifies some of the 'Alive' lyrics, a reference to selecting his tattoo on his arm, making the band laugh. ("'Son,' she said, 'why'd you pick that tattoo?'" and later, "'Is something wrong?' she said. Of course there is, yeah. 'You're unplugged,' she said. It's driving me crazy.") The guys strum a bit of Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' and The Who's 'Behind Blue Eyes.' Ed looks around during 'Porch' for something to climb and, finding nothing, stands on Dave's kick drum. Excellent acoustic set .11/09/91 - Bender Arena, American University: Washington, DC

set: Release, Even Flow, Window Paine/Once, Alive/Suggestion, Jeremy, Porch
notes: A small riff from 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' is played during the short version of 'Window Paine,' leading into 'Once.' During 'Once,' Ed sings, I've got nothin' to say ... but I hope the Knicks win tonight." Ed jokes about "George" (Bush) being in town and how the streets were blocked off. He goes on to say that George wanted backstage passes for the Peppers, which leads into 'Alive.' Before 'Porch,' Ed asks to see the biggest Knicks fan in the crowd and offers to take the fan to see the Knicks and the Nets play at MSG after the shoe. Ed mentions that the Pumpkins and Chili Peppers will play later.

supporting: Smashing Pumpkins11/14/91 - Tower Records: Yonkers, NY (acoustic) [45m]
set: Wash, Black, Alive, Oceans, Porch
notes: Similar to 11/9/91 Tower Records appearance. Small stage is set up in record stores and band performs a short, informal, excellent acoustic set. Ed sings with no mic for half the show. He is hoarse form seven shows in seven days and he ad libs a line in 'Alive' that garners a laugh from the crowd: "Is something wrong she said ... of course there is yeah ... I have no voice he said ..." Someone in the crowd comments on Ed's bandaged hand and he tells them he hurt it Tuesday (two nights before in New York at the Roseland) bashing Dave's cymbals. The small audience calls out requests so PJ does 'Oceans.' They strum a bit of Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' before 'Porch.' Ed is wearing his white Doc Martens (the same ones in the photo on the cover of the Australian 'Even Flow' CD single that got a lot of attention at the time.) Booksigning and pictures follow the set.11/15/91 - Roseland Ballroom: New York City, NY [40m]
supporting: Smashing Pumpkins, Red Hot Chili Peppers
set: Black, Once, Even Flow, (Funky Crime)/(Window Paine), Alive, Jeremy, Why Go, Porch
notes: After Even Flow, Ed sings a couple of lines from the Red Hot Chili Pepper's 'Funky Crime', from Uplift Mofo Party Plan. (The line "I do what I wanna do!" is repeated throughout that song.) Before 'Porch,' Ed jokes about his hand injury: "... if you're wondering about the cast, I saw the Michael Jackson video and I just wanted to be like him," (a reference to MJ's gloved hand).

notes: Ed remarks, "There's nothing better in the whole world than a sea of people ... it's just the tide has to go out a bit ... take a step back ... give a little breath and don't fuckin' get up here and jump unless you know what you're doing. Let's just enjoy the experience." Jeff asks Stone if Scully gets "paid double" with Stone responding, "I dunno ... can we?" Ed responds, "We're not doing this for us ... it's for them." He then thanks the Chili Peppers for giving them the night off so they can "... be a real band" and introduces 'State of Love and Trust' as from the movie they are going to be in. The 'Deep' lyrics are modified to "... on the edge of an Ann Arbor town." Ed asks the crowd to pass him to the back during 'Porch.' 'Outshined' (857k) and 'Oceans' are intermingled in the jam during 'I've Got a Feeling.'11/22/91 - State Theatre (Clubland): Detroit, MI [35m]

notes: A very chatty show. Ed greets the crowd with "Good evening. A really nice place you have here. I don't know if you've been waiting for this but we have so ..." 'Release' leads in with "heys" instead of "whoas" and lyrics are changed to "We're in Detroit, like you somehow." Then, "OK, let's get this distortion here. The rest of the night's fuckin balls to the wall." After 'Even Flow,' Ed notes, "I like the way this is set up: you got the hardcore fans right up front, the cool people are right after them - they're happy to go nuts with just their arms folded. And then in the back we got all these PEOPLE playing with themselves." During 'Once,' he sings, "I got nothing to say, except throw those guys out a window." Later: "I don't suppose any of you guys are Pistons fans, huh? Just ... while no one's around ... I just wanna tell ya: I feel really bad that the Bulls beat em. I'm ... fuckem. I hate those fuckin Bulls, man. Those fuckin bastards. What an ego that Jordan guy's got, huh? I should tell you though: Michael Jordan is my illegitimate father. And Jeff, right after, (to Jeff: you ready to go?) Jeff and I are gonna go watch the Pistons play the Knicks as soon as we walk off stage. So, who should we root for? (crowd yells "Pistons") This is for the Pistons ... 1-2-3-4."

notes: From the 12/7/91 KLOL radio interview:Ed: "Eddie's the swimmer. After last night I think I earned the true title of 'Crowd Swimmer Extraordinaire'."
Stone: "He did. He swam ..."
Ed: "I think there were 5000 people on the floor and another 2000 in the rafters. And I just at on the edge of the monitor during the last song 'Porch' and took my shoes off, took my socks off, stood up, took my shirt off, kinda stretched, took a running leap and swam on top of the crowd to the monitors and then they passed me back."
Stone: "It was probably a total of almost 60-70 yards total. There and back."12/07/91 - KLOL: Houston, TX (Ed & Stone) [35m]

enc: Breath, I've Got a Feeling
notes: It takes a while for Ed to warm up to the crowd but then he gets chatty, talking about how they haven't been to Texas before, how they stole Dave from Dr. Tongue ("tough shit") and asks if Tom Landry is there. He tells about the Singles movie and how the next song is from the movie ('State of Love and Trust'). During 'Alive' he climbs up a speaker stack and jumps off, later pulling off a shoe and looking at it saying, "I'm not getting enough air out of my Air Jordan's." A cool version of 'Garden' features full harmonies by Jeff and Stone and Mike's sweet guitar solo. Then Ed asks if Tom Landry is "... here tonight? He was on our guest list, huh? This is for Cowboy fans," leading to 'Deep.' 'Jeremy' has a nice jam and Ed explains the Jeremy story, asking the crowd if they know where Richardson, Texas is and how Jeremy shot himself in front of his English class. "Maybe he should have just ran away ... why go home? He says, "Almost all our titles are one word," leading to 'Black.' He counts off the "1, 2, 3, 4" lead-in to 'Porch' while Mike is still untangling his guitar cord and trying to plug it in.12/12/91 - Hollywood Theater: Norman, OK

enc: Suggestion
notes: After 'Garden,' Ed notes, "We didn't put Jeremy on the list!" and asks the crowd if they want to hear 'Jeremy' or another song, leading to a quick, little "hey ho, let's go" (Ramones' 'Blitzkrieg Bop'). Then they go into a few 'Smell Like Teen Spirit' riffs, with Ed following up by singing, "I feel stupid" to the 'Teen Spirit' tune. Ed sings two lines from 'Outshined' as a lead-in to 'Leash.' At the end of 'Porch,' Jeff breaks his ankle so they cut the show short. Ed comes out and sings 'Suggestion' solo as a brief encore.12/23/91 - KNDD (Stone & Jeff intv) [15m]
The guys are in the holiday spirit and discuss how it is Ed's birthday that night. They introduce "Even Fro" as a song about maintaining your Afro ;)12/27/91 - Sports Arena: Los Angeles, CA
supporting: Nirvana and RHCP
set: Wash, Once, Even Flow, Alive, Why Go, Leash, Porch
Ed jumps into the audience and runs the way to the back of the Arena, then back to the stage. On his way back, he eats it big time on a row of seats that he didn't see. Full on, down on his face, in the middle of the crowd. Gets right up and keeps moving.

set: Wash, Once, Even Flow, Alive, Jeremy, Why Go, Porch
notes: During 'Porch,' Ed climbs the scaffolding and hangs upside down by his knees, singing the outtro chorus. The place is electrified as he jumps down, the crowd fearful someone might die. Lots of chat from Ed and during Nirvana's set, he repeatedly comes from the wings of the stage, running top speed and diving far out into the crowd. He is carefully returned to the stage each time.12/31/91 - Cow Palace: Daly City, CA [30m]
attendance: 16,000
supporting: Nirvana and RHCP
set: Once, Even Flow, (Suggestion)/Why Go, Jeremy, Alive, Leash, (Smells Like Teen Spirit teaser), Porch
notes: New Year's Eve and three great bands! Ed comments, "If I wasn't in this band, I would still make sure I was here tonight." Ed sings part of Fugazi's 'Waiting Room' as an intro to 'Even Flow.' A driven performance, with a particularly intense version of 'Alive.' Flea of RHCP assists with vocals during 'Leash.' The 'Teen Spirit' teaser (actually the longest teaser I've heard) is followed by Stone's quip, "Just remember, we played it first." (833k) Ed performs one of his finest stage dives, repeating it later during the 'Yurtle the Turtle' encore with the Chili Peppers.
